On this page I will periodically post about my favorite YA books growing up, and about other classic YA literature.
Each week I will have a featured YA of Yesterday classic (however loosely you can define ‘classic’). Other books, movies and music are discussed in the linked pages under ‘YA of Yesterday.’
Featured YA of Yesterday: Ender’s Game
This was another book pressed into my hands by a classmate in high school (so long ago) that has found new life in today’s YA literature both as a Marvel comic and as a ‘must read’ books for today’s teens.
On a recent trip to a big box bookstore that shall remain unnamed, I saw a display of ’20 books to read before age 20′ and was surprised to see Ender’s Game in this collection amongst more contemporary titles like Twilight (of course) and Octavian Nothing.
But, Ender’s story – that of a talented young boy who while intelligent is still oblivious that the training school he is attending is actually more entrenched in the vicious war between human beings and the alien ‘Buggers’ – is timeless I guess, and quite cross-genre. Many friends of mine who hate sci-fi (or at least profess to) loved this book.
However, it seems as though any plans to make a movie out of Ender’s Game have been indefinitely shelved (I found a blog detailing the movie process here) but this story seems to be living on just fine with today’s teens in graphic form (see the Marvel site here) and in regular old paperback – the cover is even the same as the one I first read.
From the new Marvel series….
